With financial support from the Regional Council of Réunion and the Fondation du Patrimoine, the ruins of the Bel Air Chapel and their lush green surroundings have been restored to pay tribute to the formerly enslaved people and indentured laborers who contributed to the estate’s prosperity from 1850 to 1878, as well as to the extraordinary figure of Camille Jurien de la Gravière, Bel Air’s unconventional owner during that period.
Continue your tour with a visit to the Payet & Rivière artisanal sugar shack and distillery, and taste the traditional Bonbon Galabé and Réunion’s very first estate-produced rums.
This “History” tour is open to visitors ages 12 and up.
Dress code: Closed-toe shoes and pants are recommended. Bring a hat and/or rain gear depending on the weather.
Recommended parking: in front of the “Dodo” store.
Practical Information: Since sugarcane juice production is a seasonal activity, we cannot guarantee that visitors will be able to see the sugar shack and the equipment in operation during their visit. The tour departs with a minimum of 4 people (combined groups). Payet & Rivière reserves the right to cancel or modify the reservation the night before if conditions, whether logistical or weather-related, are not suitable.
